LOKTA PAPER

Traditional Nepali handmade paper (handmade, meaning handmade on water) is made from the fibrous stalks of a cousin of the hemp
- plant called Daphne Cannabina/Daphne Papyracea.
The paper is then dried in the sun and brought down into the valleys on the backs of magnificent yaks.
The process of making this paper is an example of traditional Nepalese craftsmanship.

This plant grows on the Himalayan slopes and, importantly, like hemp, is considered to be very eco-friendly.
The paper is environmentally friendly, as the roots of the plant are not destroyed in the production process and the typical regeneration time of the stalks is 2-3 years.
Lokta paper is also sometimes referred to as rice paper.

In Nepal, Lokta grows in the Himalayas at an altitude of 2,500-3,000m and is an extremely valued raw material due to its durability and resistance to insects,
It has been used for centuries for, among other things, official government documents or religious texts.

Nowadays, it is used in a wide range of applications, e.g. for making photo albums, notebooks, lanterns, incense packs, etc. (many of these can also be found in our shop).
